O

Oslo is the capital of Norway and also its largest city. With a population of nearly 1.5 million people, Oslo sits at the northernmost end of the Oslofjord. Founded in the year 1048 by King Harald III of Norway, the city was nearly lost to a fire in 1624. When it was rebuilt, it was renamed Christiania. Effective January 1, 1925, the name was restored to Oslo. Oslo is often referred to as the “City of Tigers” related to a reference by author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson in 1870, although there are no tigers in Norway. The reference was related to the author’s perception of Oslo as a cold and dangerous place. Today Oslo is a thriving metropolitan city.

At the head of the fjord is a sight to behold—O is for Oslo, one thousand years old.
